A Hard Job Market Is Not a Personal Failure

A young Indonesian job seeker reviews a portfolio with a mentor

Young job seekers can build evidence of their skills while employers and institutions work to make the path into employment fairer.

Sending applications without hearing back can make a person question their worth. Yet hiring depends on more than individual effort: vacancies, economic conditions, networks, location, and access to training all shape the opportunities available.

The source report describes higher unemployment among young Indonesians than the national rate in 2026. Its figures were taken from news coverage of BPS releases, not checked directly against the original BPS publication. They should be verified there before being used as official statistics. They do not establish how much of the difficulty was caused by AI.

What overseas AI research can tell us

The report also discusses a US study of employment in occupations exposed to AI. Its data concern the United States, and the authors describe the findings as observational. They do not establish an equivalent effect in Indonesia or prove that every entry-level job will disappear.

Some tasks will change as tools change. Employers still need to explain what skills they expect, create ways for beginners to gain experience, and evaluate applicants fairly. Individual preparation matters, but it cannot by itself create a vacancy.

Build a project you can explain

Choose a role that interests you and compare its requirements with your current skills. Pick one gap you can work on. A small project can demonstrate how you approach a problem: a data analysis, a piece of writing, a prototype, or work done with a community. Describe your contribution and ask for feedback.

AI can help you practice or explore alternatives. Check the output and make sure you can explain your decisions. Protect other people's private information and obtain permission before showing their work in a portfolio.

Make the plan fit your life

The source report proposes a twelve-week learning plan: identify a role and skills gap, practice regularly, complete a project, and collect feedback. Adapt its duration to your available time and resources. A plan is a tool for organizing effort, not a guarantee of employment or a measure of personal worth.

Mentors, schools, employers, and public institutions all have a role in widening access to decent work. A young person looking for a first opportunity deserves practical support and a fair hearing, not the assumption that every rejection reflects a lack of effort.
